Dance

Dance Department

The Dance Department of Instituto Distrital de las Artes (Idartes) manages, executes and evaluates plans, programs and projects for the promotion and appropriation of dance in Bogotá. We work so that artists and spectators find in dance a space for the exercise of cultural rights, the strengthening of the sense of identity, enjoyment, coexistence, tolerance, respect and recognition of the artist’s craft.

The above understanding that dance inhabits the human body as the first territory to be built, known and felt, but being an eminently social act it creates a permanent articulation between the body that dances and a great diversity of territories that contextualize, support, motivate or question it.

These are spatial territories that range from the local to the global, social, ethnic, age, and population territories, disciplinary territories that cross different artistic expressions and generate new proximities between art, culture and technology, territories of dance that embrace from the most traditional to what emerges with the contemporary dynamics of creation.

The Idartes Dance Department is in charge of managing the programs and projects that promote dance in Bogotá and its appropriation by citizens, through four management axes, which are in line with the entity’s core mission objectives for the four-year period 2020–2024: Bogotá Flourishes.

Dissemination of Dance in the City:

Management of events, meetings and festivals in the sector.

Orbitante Bogotá Dance Platform:

A space for building relationships for training and practice for artistic creation.

Dance and community:

Development of activities with a differential population approach, health programs, living archive and the Casona de la Danza.

Incentives Programs:

Scholarships, residencies, awards, internships and juries of the District Incentives Program.

Each of these axes has its own particularities that seek to democratize dance in the city and contribute to the strengthening of art as a generator of social change and recognition of communities.

In addition, every year the Department holds the Festival Danza en la Ciudad, an event that makes it possible for the dance show to take over the city in a party that brings together hundreds of national and international artists in theaters, stages and public spaces.
